How to Use My Back-to-School Bundle (or Just Steal the Freebie!)

I love creating plans and routines. I remember spending most of the summer before my first year of teaching figuring out the schedule for my classroom—color-coded blocks, neatly organized bins, all the ideas pinned on Pinterest.
But the truth? I had no idea what the first week of school was actually going to feel like.
No specials. No set routines. No curriculum yet. Just me, a group of brand-new students, and hours of time to fill. That first week is no joke—and you’re expected to build relationships, assess your students, and keep things moving... all while learning their names.

That’s why I created this Back to School ELA Bundle—a resource that brings joy, engagement, and lots of writing and ELA into those chaotic first days. Below, I’m giving you a ready-to-go first week ELA plan, plus ideas for how to use each item on its own if you’re not ready for the full bundle.
And bonus: I’ve got a free task card sheet waiting for you too—so even if you leave here empty carted, you won’t leave empty-handed. 🙌
What’s Inside the Bundle?
36 Icebreaker Discussion Cards – Quick community builders that get students talking (great for transitions too!)
36 Creative Writing Task Cards – Plus an Exit Ticket and two writing response sheets to help structure early writing time
ELA Escape Room (4 Puzzles) – Covers grammar, parts of speech, reading skills, and more in a fun, informal assessment format
First Week of School ELA Plan (Using the Bundle Together)
Here’s a simple way to use the full bundle over your first week:
Day 1: Break the Ice + Light ELA
Use 3–5 Icebreaker Cards for a morning meeting or partner sharing.
Start Escape Room Puzzle 1 to ease into classroom routines with teamwork and fun.
Day 2: Start Writing Without Pressure
Choose 2–3 Writing Task Cards and let students pick their favorite.
Collect the Exit Ticket at the end of class to learn how students feel about writing.
Day 3: Sneaky Assessment Day
Use Escape Room Puzzles 2 & 3 to informally assess grammar, sentence skills, and parts of speech.
Keep it light—students love the “puzzle” vibe.
Day 4: More Writing + Reflection
Add 3 more Writing Task Cards with the lined response sheets.
Finish the day with 2–3 Icebreaker Cards for circle time or partner talk.
Day 5: Wrap It Up
Use Escape Room Puzzle 4 as a final challenge or class competition.
Let students write a reflection on their first week using another task card.
